Last bell for late returns in Italy

For any of you who have not made an Italian tax return (and should have) the Italian tax authorities are allowing you until 29th December to file a late return. There is a small fine (25 euro) plus interest to pay on the tax due.

But all-in-all far better than the fine for not making a return at all, which costs a minimum of 258 euro but can be as high as 240% of the tax due. The fine is doubled for those who are under an obligation to keep accounts – basically those running a business.

Should you have made an Italian tax return?

  • Do you have property in Italy?
  • Are you resident in Italy?
  • Are you running a business in Italy?

If the answer to any of the above is yes, then you probably should have made a return.
